The Pretérito Indefinido is a past tense used to talk about completed actions in the past. These actions are finished and have no connection to the present moment.
Pretérito Indefinido is very common in daily stories, past experiences, and short narratives.
❓ When Is the Pretérito Indefinido Used?
1️⃣ The action started and ended in the past:
- Viví en Madrid dos años. – I lived in Madrid for two years. → Ya no vivo allí
- Estudié medicina en la universidad. – I studied medicine at university. → Terminé mis estudios
- Trabajé en esa empresa cinco años. – I worked at that company for five years. → Ya no trabajo allí
2️⃣ The time is specific or clearly defined:
- Ayer comí en un restaurante italiano. – Yesterday I ate at an Italian restaurant.
- El sábado pasado salí con mis amigos. – Last Saturday I went out with my friends.
- Anoche llamé a mis padres. – Last night I called my parents.
3️⃣ We talk about past events in a sequence:
- Ayer me levanté temprano, desayuné y salí de casa. – Yesterday I got up early, had breakfast, and left home.
- Llegué a casa, preparé la cena y miré una película. – I arrived home, prepared dinner, and watched a movie.

The Pretérito Indefinido is often used with specific past time markers. These expressions help show that the action is finished.

1️⃣ Remember that accent marks are important. They’re not just decoration—they change the meaning of the word entirely!
Stress marks are essential in the yo and él/ella/usted forms:
- hablé (I spoke) vs. hable (subjunctive mood or imperative form)
- habló (he/she spoke) vs. hablo (I speak)
👉 The accent shows it’s past tense—not present or a command.
2️⃣ “Nosotros” looks the same in the present and past tenses—but context tells the time.
- Ayer hablamos con el casero. → Past (yesterday = Pretérito)
- Normalmente hablamos español. → Present (normally = Presente)
👉 The time word (not the verb ending) shows when it happened.
3️⃣ You may see the form fue in the dialogues and texts in this lesson.
The verbs ser and ir share the same past forms: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. You don’t need to conjugate these yet. Just recognize “fue” in context.
👉 fue is the Pretérito Indefinido form of ser and ir (he/she/it)
At this level, you only need to recognize its meaning in context:
- El viaje fue corto. – The trip was short.
- Fue a casa temprano. – He went home early.
