🧠 Grammar Focus: Quick Review – Ser vs Estar
In Spanish, there are two verbs that mean “to be”: ser and estar.
A good way to think about it is this:
- Ser: describes what something is (identity and permanent traits).
- Estar: describes how something is or where it is (states, conditions, and location).
Let’s look at the most common uses:
| Ser → | Permanent characteristics, profession, nationality, etc. | Soy profesor. I am a teacher. | Eres español. You are Spanish. |
| Estar → | Temporary states, feelings, location | Estoy cansado. I am tired. | Estamos en casa. We are at home. |
👉 Soy alto → this is a permanent characteristic (my height doesn’t change).
👉 Estoy enfermo → this is a temporary state (only now, not always).
✔️ If you imagine the situation changing → use estar.
✔️ If it describes who you are or what something is → use ser.
🟢 The Same Adjective Can Use Both!
Some adjectives work with both ser and estar, but the meaning changes:
👉 With SER → describes the essence or general characteristic:
- Eres aburrido. – You are boring. (This is your personality – you’re a boring person)
- La sopa es rica. – The soup is delicious. (This soup is always good, it’s a tasty recipe)
👉 With ESTAR → describes a current state or how something is right now:
- Estás aburrido. – You are bored. (Right now, in this moment, you feel bored)
- La sopa está rica. – The soup is/tastes delicious. (I’m tasting it now and it’s good)
📝 More examples:
- Eres guapo. – You’re handsome. (permanent trait)
- Estás muy guapo hoy. – You look very handsome today. (temporary state, maybe because of new clothes)
- Soy feliz. – I’m a happy person. (general characteristic)
- Estoy feliz hoy. – I’m happy today. (current emotional state)
🔑 The key difference: SER = what you ARE, ESTAR = how you are RIGHT NOW.
🎯 Practice Activities: Ser or Estar
Decide whether to use ser or estar in each sentence based on the context and meaning. Remember that ser is used for permanent characteristics while estar is used for temporary states and locations.
🧠 Grammar Focus: Estar + Gerundio
Estar + gerundio is used to describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking or temporary actions happening around now.
It is very similar to the English present continuous (“I am doing”).

3️⃣ Spelling change: Verbs with a vowel stem → -yendo
We use -yendo instead of -iendo to make the pronunciation easier when the verb stem (the part before -er/-ir) ends in a vowel. This change avoids having three vowels together, which is difficult to pronounce in Spanish.

💡 Quick Tip: Look at the letters just before -er or -ir. If it is a vowel (like the e in leer or the a in traer), use -yendo!
4️⃣ Verbs with stem change (-e → -i, -o → -u)
In the gerundio, some -ir verbs change their stem to make pronunciation easier: e → i and o → u.

When the verb has a stem change e → i, the vowel e changes to i in the gerundio.

Things happening these days, this week, or this period of time, but not permanently.
- Esta semana estoy trabajando mucho. – This week I’m working a lot.
- Estoy aprendiendo español este mes. – I’m learning Spanish this month.
🔶 Present Simple → habits & routines
Used for things that happen regularly.
- Yo estudio español los lunes. – I study Spanish on Mondays.
- Trabajo en una oficina. – I work in an office.
- Voy al gimnasio por la mañana. – I go to the gym in the morning.
🔶 Present Continuous → happening now
Used for what is happening today / right now.
- Hoy estoy estudiando español. – Today I’m studying Spanish.
- Ahora estoy trabajando desde casa –I’m working from home now.
- Estoy hablando por teléfono en este momento. – I’m talking on the phone at this moment.

🚦 In Spanish, Present Continuous is used less often than in English. Spanish prefers the Present Simple unless you want to emphasize that the action is happening right now.
- Trabajo en una oficina. → normal present
- Estoy trabajando ahora mismo. → emphasis on “now”
