Es el 10 de julio. – It’s July 10th.
¿Qué día es hoy? – What day is today?
Hoy es viernes. – Today is Friday.
¿Qué hora es? – What time is it?
Son las tres y media. – It’s three thirty.
Son las siete de la noche. – It’s seven in the evening.
¿Cuándo es el cumpleaños? – When is the birthday?
Mi cumpleaños es el 8 de mayo. – My birthday is May 8th.
🧠 Grammar Focus: Talking about Days, Dates, and Time
Use Hoy es followed by the day of the week to state the current day. Days are not capitalized unless at the start of a sentence.
- Hoy es lunes. – Today is Monday.
- Hoy es viernes. – Today is Friday.
Express dates: Use el [number] de [month] to express dates, often with Hoy es… or Es….
- Hoy es el 15 de julio. – Today is July 15th.
- Hoy es el 3 de noviembre. – Today is November 3rd.
With years: Add de [year]:
- Hoy es el 10 de enero de 2025. – Today is January 10, 2025.
- Hoy es el 4 de octubre de 1990. – Today is October 4, 1990.
Note: Always use EL before the date, and DE to connect the day, month, and year.
⚠️ In Spanish, only the first day of the month is written as “el primero”, not “el uno”. This is a fixed rule:
- el primero de enero, el primero de diciembre, etc.
- el dos de febrero, el dos de marzo, etc.
⌛️ Saying the Time
Use Es la una for one o’clock and Son las for all other hours.
Structure:
- Hour + y cuarto (quarter past), y media (half past), or menos cuarto (quarter to).
- Add: de la mañana (morning), de la tarde (afternoon), or de la noche (night).
Examples:
- Es la una. – 01:00 / 13:00
- Son las tres y media. – 03:30 / 15:30
- Son las diez y cuarto de la noche. – 22:15
- Son las cinco menos cuarto. – 4:45 /16:45
- Son las siete de la noche. – 19:00
Note: Time in Spanish uses 24-hour format in formal settings.
