🎯 Goal: Learn to conjugate common irregular verbs in the present tense, grouped by their irregularity patterns (e.g., ir, hacer, conocer). Master vocabulary for places (lugares), such as city locations, shops, and natural areas.

🧠 Grammar Explanation: Irregular Verbs
In Spanish, irregular verbs deviate from the standard conjugation patterns of -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs. This lesson groups irregular verbs by their irregularity patterns to simplify learning. Below are the key groups, with conjugation tables for selected verbs (ir, hacer, conocer).
1️⃣ Group 1: Fully Irregular Verbs
These verbs have unique conjugations with no consistent pattern
Verbs: ser (to be), ir (to go), haber (to have, auxiliary).
| Subject | ser | ir | haber |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | soy | voy | he |
| tú | eres | vas | has |
| él/ella/usted | es | va | ha |
| nosotros/as | somos | vamos | hemos |
| vosotros/as | sois | vais | habéis |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | son | van | han |
📝 Examples:
- Soy estudiante. – I am a student.
- Voy al parque. – I go to the park.
- Ya he comido. – I have eaten.
2️⃣Group 2: Verbs Ending in -CER/-CIR
These verbs change C to ZC in the yo form to maintain pronunciation.
| Subject | Conocer |
|---|---|
| yo | conozco |
| tú | conoces |
| él/ella/usted | conoce |
| nosotros/as | conocemos |
| vosotros/as | conocéis |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | conocen |
📝 Example:
- Conozco el lugar. – I know the place.
- Conoces a mi hermana. – You know my sister.
The spelling changes from C → ZC in the yo form to preserve the /θ/ or /s/ sound before -o. Without it, the c would be pronounced as /k/ (like in casa). Compare:
- Conocer → conozco (not ❌”conoco”)
- Traducir → traduzco (not ❌”traduco”)
| Infinitive | English | Yo | Tu | Él |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| conocer | to know | conozco | conoces | conoce |
| ofrecer | to offer | ofrezco | ofreces | ofrece |
| merecer | to deserve | merezco | mereces | merece |
| agradecer | to thank | agradezco | agradeces | agradece |
| traducir | to translate | traduzco | traduces | traduce |
| producir | to produce | produzco | produces | produce |
| aparecer | to appear | aparezco | apareces | aparece |
| crecer | to grow | crezco | creces | crece |
📝 Example:
- Yo conozco Madrid bien. – I know Madrid well.
- Yo ofrezco ayuda a mis amigos. – I offer help to my friends.
- Yo merezco un descanso. – I deserve a break.
- Yo agradezco tu consejo. – I appreciate your advice.
- Yo traduzco textos al inglés. – I translate texts to English.
- Yo produzco música. – I produce music.
- Yo aparezco en la foto. – I appear in the photo.
- Yo crezco rápido. – I grow fast.
3️⃣Group 3: Verbs Ending in -UIR
These verbs add a *y* in all forms except nosotros and vosotros to maintain pronunciation (avoiding “ui” becoming a diphthong).
Common -UIR Verbs: construir (to build), destruir (to destroy), incluir (to include), huir (to flee)
| Subject | construir |
|---|---|
| yo | construyo |
| tú | construyes |
| él/ella/usted | construye |
| nosotros/as | construimos |
| vosotros/as | construís |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | construyen |
| Pronombre | Destruir | Incluir | Huir |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | destruyo | incluyo | huyo |
| tú | destruyes | incluyes | huyes |
| él | destruye | incluye | huye |
| nosotros | destruimos | incluimos | huimos |
| vosotros | destruís | incluís | huís |
| ellos | destruyen | incluyen | huyen |
📝 Example:
- Construyo una casa. – I build a house.
- Construyes un edificio. – You build a building.
- Yo destruyo los documentos. – I destroy the documents.
- Yo incluyo verduras en mi comida. – I include vegetables in my food.
- Yo huyo del trabajo. – I flee from work.
Why Add a Y? Prevents awkward pronunciation of *-ui-*:
- ❌ “construo” → Hard to say.
- ✅ “construyo” → Clear /u-yo/ sound.
4️⃣Group 4: Irregular Yo Form Only
These verbs have irregular *yo* forms but follow regular patterns elsewhere.
| Verb | Meaning | Yo Form | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| dar | to give | doy | Doy un regalo. |
| saber | to know | sé | Sé la respuesta. |
| ver | to see/watch | veo | Veo una película. |
| hacer | to do/make | hago | Hago una tarta. |
| salir | to go out/leave | salgo | Salgo al cine. |
| poner | to put | pongo | Pongo el libro en la mesa. |
| traer | to bring | traigo | Traigo comida. |
| venir | to come | vengo | Vengo a las ocho. |
| caer | to fall | caigo | Caigo en el parque. |
| valer | to be worth | valgo | Valgo mucho. |
| caber | to fit | quepo | Quepo en el coche. |
✅ Verbs: Dar, saber, hacer, ver
| Pronombre | dar | saber | ver | hacer | salir |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | doy | sé | veo | hago | salgo |
| tú | das | sabes | ves | haces | sales |
| él/ella | da | sabe | ve | hace | sale |
| nosotros | damos | sabemos | vemos | hacemos | salimos |
| vosotros | dais | sabéis | veis | hacéis | salís |
| ellos/ellas | dan | saben | ven | hacen | salen |
📝 Examples:
- Yo doy un regalo a mi hermana. – I give a gift to my sister.
- Tú sabes mucho de historia. – You know a lot about history.
- Nosotros vemos una película interesante. – We are watching an interesting movie.
- Mi madre hace la cena cada noche. – My mom makes dinner every night.
- Yo salgo del trabajo a las seis. – I leave work at six.
✅ Poner, traer, caer, venir, caber
| Pronombre | poner | traer | caer | valer | caber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | pongo | traigo | caigo | valgo | quepo |
| tú | pones | traes | caes | vales | cabes |
| él/ella | pone | trae | cae | vale | cabe |
| nosotros | ponemos | traemos | caemos | valemos | cabemos |
| vosotros | ponéis | traéis | caéis | valéis | cabéis |
| ellos/ellas | ponen | traen | caen | valen | caben |
📝 Examples:
- Ella pone la mesa antes de cenar. – She sets the table before dinner.
- Nosotros traemos bebidas a la fiesta. – We bring drinks to the party.
- Ellos traen comida. – They bring food.
- Yo caigo al suelo. – I fall to the ground.
- Tú vales mucho. – You are worth a lot.
- Quepo en el coche. – I fit in the car.
💡 While yo valgo is grammatically possible (e.g., Yo valgo para mis amigos), it’s rarely used in everyday speech and sounds unnatural in most contexts. It typically appears in poetic, motivational, or psychological language. At the A1-A2 level, valer is almost always used in the third person. Example: ¿Cuánto vale?, Vale la pena.
⚠️ The verb “oír“ is an exception!
It is irregular in almost all forms, not just yo.
| yo | oigo |
| tú | oyes |
| él/ella | oye |
| nosotros | oímos |
| vosotros | oís |
| ellos | oyen |
📝 Examples:
- Ella oye música. – She hears music.
- Yo no oigo nada. – I don’t hear anything.
There’s a special group of stem-changing verbs that follow unique conjugation patterns: empezar, dormir, jugar, etc. We’ll explore them in the next lesson.
